9/11 Memorial Stair Climb

In remembrance of the fallen first responders of 9/11, members of the Police and Fire Departments joined countywide agencies and climbed a total of 110 stories through the stairwell of the Hilton Bay Front Hotel. Each member climbed in the memory of a specific first responder hero who gave their life while saving others at the World Trade Center.


Traffic Calming Around Schools

The Police Department’s traffic unit is joining forces with Carlsbad schools to calm traffic around the schools. Now that the school year is in full force, traffic around schools can be congested. Traffic motor officers are working with the schools and community to alleviate traffic issues. Community members are encouraged to follow the rules and report traffic complaints on the new www.carlsbadca.gov/reportit link.


Join the Life in Action network on LinkedIn

Economic development has launched a Life in Action showcase page on LinkedIn where we will be sharing information on what a great place Carlsbad is for high-tech jobs. The site will feature active job openings within our city’s innovative industries like life sciences, tech and action sports manufacturing. Follow the page and encourage anyone in your network who should be in Carlsbad to follow the page. Their next job opportunity could be waiting for them there!


Foreign Film Friday Season Kick off Last Friday, Cultural Arts kicked off its latest season of Foreign Film Fridays in Schulman Auditorium with the Swiss comedy/drama The Divine Order about a woman fighting for women's suffrage in 1971 Switzerland. More than 200 people attended and shared appreciation for the return of the popular series.


Innovation and Boundary Spanning Learning Last Wednesday through Friday, Library & Cultural Arts Director Heather Pizzuto and Deputy Library Director Suzanne Smithson attended the Urban Libraries Council annual forum in Baltimore, MD, with over 250 public library leaders across the country, to experience extensive networking opportunities and valuable education to help libraries strengthen their role as community leaders. The conference also advanced national conversations on the library’s continually evolving role in supporting communities through learning, engagement, and access for all to resources that will help them to thrive.

Journeys of Inspiration Author Panel On Sunday, the library hosted three authors – Cindy Henson (Jungle: A Journey to Peace, Purpose and Freedom), Lisa Shapiro (No Forgotten Fronts: From Classroom to Combat) and Marlene Wagman-Geller (Women Who Launch) – to discuss their books on the topic “Journeys of Inspiration.” The books explored the true stories of SDSU’s Professor Lauren Post, who held together an entire community during World War II, and women like Cindy Henson and Krista Suh, game-changers and entrepreneurs. More than 50 attendees were inspired by the discussion and chance to meet the authors.


Patriot Day

In honor of Patriot Day, the Senior Center invited guests from the Marine Light Attack Helicopter (Viper) Squadron 169 at Camp Pendleton, to join the seniors for lunch and live music. Guests wore red, white and blue and the dining room was decorated in patriotic décor to highlight the occasion.
