Teen Programs

City of Carlsbad staff members, Kevin Gohres and Jessica Padilla-Bowen were interviewed Tuesday on CHS-TV by Carlsbad High School student, Shayla Eslampour. They spoke about exciting new teen programming opportunities in the Parks & Recreation and Cultural Arts Departments. Kevin highlighted teen programs offered at Pine Avenue Community Center, as well as volunteer and job opportunities. Jessica spoke about the creative activities the library offers and invited teen input for future program planning. Watch the full interview here.


Be a Santa to a Senior

Christmas arrived early at the Carlsbad Senior Center on Tuesday, with a special holiday performance from Jefferson Elementary School second grade students. The Kids for Peace club presented gifts and more than 75 homemade cards for the homebound senior program, “Be a Santa to a Senior.” It was a festive and meaningful afternoon for the seniors and second graders alike!


Ed Garbo Obtains COSS Certification

Risk Manager Ed Garbo recently completed a week-long safety training course at Pacific Safety Center and obtained his Certified Occupational Safety Specialist (COSS) certification. Ed is the sixth Carlsbad staff member to receive this designation.


Festive Piano Concert Wows Full House Last Friday, as part of the Front Row Fridays series, the Schulman Auditorium hosted a duo of pianists that sparked enthusiastic applause and a standing ovation from a capacity crowd of 215. The award-winning Grigorian Gubenko Piano Duo celebrated the holiday season by performing festive musical selections by Debussy, Dvorak and Tchaikovsky. Featuring four hands on one piano, the evening’s crowd-pleaser was music from the perennial favorite, The Nutcracker. The Cultural Arts staff received a record number of audience surveys complimenting the performance and the ongoing series. The next Front Row Fridays event will be on Jan. 11 at 7 p.m., and will feature Opera Exposed!, performances by members of San Diego Opera's Young Artist Training Program.


Library Hosts Youth Holiday Programs All three Carlsbad City Library locations hosted holiday programs for kids and teens this week. On Tuesday, children enjoyed stories and made crafts at the Gift of Giving Story Craft at Cole Library while Carlsbad High School Carolers performed holiday songs at Dove Library. Excited children met Santa at the Cole Library and Library Learning Center on Thursday afternoon. Teens had their own events Thursday and Friday with a screening of The Nightmare Before Christmas at Dove Library and a celebration of the winter solstice at the Learning Center.
