New Mindful Living Series Begins On Thursday, the first of a new fall Mindful Living series began with a Mindful Veterans workshop. In this workshop, attendees learned how being fully present can help transform stress into manageable challenge during periods of transition that are sometimes beyond their control. The series will continue monthly through April 2019. The next workshop, Mindful Reflective Leadership, will be on Saturday, Dec. 8 from 9-10:30 a.m. at the Carlsbad City Library Schulman Auditorium, 1775 Dove Lane.

Experience Virtual Reality at the Library’s Exploration HUB The next four-part Create 360° Virtual Reality Video class series kicks off Saturday, Nov. 3 in the Exploration HUB at Carlsbad City Library. The class includes information about various types of virtual reality, including immersive and 360° video. Using their own smartphones, attendees will learn how to access 360° VR videos on their phone using the Google cardboard-like VR viewers. Each attendee will get their own cardboard viewer to take home. Interested participants can sign up online.


Good Life Lecture Series Come to Close The fall Good Life Lecture Series came to a close on Tuesday with a workshop on sustainable strategies for retirement. The series, held each Tuesday in October from 12:30-1:30 p.m., also covered other health and wellness topics such as nutritional brain boosters, stress relief and maintaining a healthy weight. More than 300 people attended the free workshops, which kick off again in April 2019.


American Society of Landscape Architects Annual Meeting and Expo

Last week park planning staff from the Parks & Recreation Department attended the American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA) Annual Meeting and Expo in Philadelphia. More than 130 courses were offered throughout the meeting allowing the attendees to earn professional development hours to maintain their state licenses and certifications. The Expo provided an opportunity to explore hundreds of new products, services, technology and design solutions - all under one roof.


Dia de los Muertos

The Parks & Recreation and Library & Cultural Arts Departments, and dozens of community volunteers joined forces to celebrate Dia de los Muertos at Leo Carrillo Ranch Historic Park last weekend. On Saturday night, more than 100 guests were treated to a candlelit hacienda tour, featuring elaborately decorated oferendas honoring the Carrillo family, followed by dinner on the patio. On Sunday, more than 400 adults and children joined the family oriented cultural celebration. Activities included Family Open Studios art projects, story time, face painting, sugar skull decorating, strolling mariachi performers, and colorful ballet folklorico dancers.
