Carlsbad Contributes to California Climate Assessment On Aug. 27 the California Energy Commission, Office and Planning and Research, and Natural Resources Agency released the 4th California Climate Assessment. The Assessment details the latest in climate science and vulnerability analysis and informs local and state agencies on their climate change resiliency efforts. This is the first Assessment to contain regional reports, one of which covers the San Diego Region. Environmental Management staff member Mike Grim was a contributing author. The San Diego regional report highlights local Carlsbad projects such as the desalination plant, microgrid feasibility study, and sea level rise vulnerability study. It also includes a case study about how the City of Carlsbad is leveraging its existing Community Vision of Sustainability and regional partnerships to pursue these climate change adaptation projects. Improving Sewer System Reliability The City of Carlsbad and City of Vista are joint partners on the construction of a new $44 million dollar Agua Hedionda Sewer Lift Station. This week, the project reached a major milestone as construction crews diverted waste water flows to the new station to begin testing and commissioning. Over the next few weeks, the construction team, engineering team and station operators will fine tune the system to run automatically, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. When complete, the contractor will decommission and demolish the old station. The project has an anticipated completion in early 2019. Grow Your Garden at the Library: Fall Plantings Zucchini’s, tomatoes and basil oh my! More than 40 participants gathered to exchange fruits, vegetables, succulent clippings, seeds, herbs and garden plants on Saturday at Georgina Cole Library. Carlsbad Community Garden also shared gardening techniques in our Fall Plantings workshop alongside Armstrong Nurseries and invited attendees to tour the Carlsbad Community Garden. The Real Santas United also provided seeds and shared information about healthy eating to participants in the workshop. It was a lovely day with lots of shared crops amongst neighbors. Library Concert Brings Attendees to Their Feet On Sunday, the library hosted a concert featuring award-winning musicians Los Pinguos. The musicians came to the United States from Buenos Aires, Argentina, and performed a mixture of Latin rhythms, reggae, cumbia and rock. A full house of more than 200 enjoyed the upbeat concert, dancing in the auditorium as the concert came to an end. Good Life Lecture Series Comes to a Close The library’s Good Life Travel Lecture series came to a close on Tuesday, with more than 90 people attending a presentation on Rediscovering Italy, where the speaker shared new sights and activities in Umbria, Tuscany and Lazio. The three other presentations in the series included Traveling Light and Easy, Great Castles of England and Jewels in America’s Crown: Three National Parks. Float n’ Flick Last Saturday, over 100 people joined us at Alga Norte Community Park for Float n’ Flick, to enjoy one more day of family fun before school kicked back in! The event had attendants swimming and lounging in the warm water pool while watching A Bug’s Life on the big outdoor movie screen. The warm summer night was enhanced with tasty treats from the Dive in Grill, including freshly grilled burgers, ice cream, and of course delicious movie popcorn! Senior Volunteer Patrol Graduation At a graduation ceremony, the Police Department welcomed six new volunteer patrol members into its ranks. Members of the volunteer patrol are age 50 and above and attend a two-week academy. The patrol assists the Police Department with activities like neighborhood patrols, traffic control, foot patrols, handicap parking enforcement, station tours, the YANA program, special events and much more. DUI Checkpoint Honors Fallen CHP Officer The Police Department joined forces with the California Highway Patrol for a Sean Nava Memorial DUI/Safety Checkpoint. Officer Nava was killed by a drunk driver while on duty on October 28, 2000. The checkpoint on Carlsbad Boulevard at Cherry Avenue was a success. Carlsbad Hosts Fire Marshal Course Carlsbad Fire Department hosted the first class offering of Fire Marshal 1A. This new five course series was developed by the State Fire Marshals Office to train current and future Fire Marshals about the administrative functions and legal responsibilities of the Fire Marshal role. Fire Marshal Randy Metz, as well as two Fire Marshals from Northern California, serve as instructors for this course throughout the state. 30 students attended this 3 day course, including Carlsbad Fire Prevention personnel Cindy Wong and Dominic Fieri.
