Upbeat Crowd at Library Concert The Georgina Cole Library was anything but quiet on Sunday with a performance by guitarist Jimmy Patton and percussionist Enrique Plata. The duo’s upbeat music incorporating flamenco, Middle-Eastern, Brazilian and other world rhythms had the 85-member audience clapping and singing along as well as dancing.
Protecting Cultural Resources
Thanks to the dedication and tireless efforts of staff across several departments citywide, the tribal cultural resources encountered during the El Camino Real widening project have been successfully repatriated. The El Camino Real widening project commenced on Dec. 4, 2014, and was completed on Dec. 31, 2016. During construction, the contractor performing the grading and excavation work encountered tribal cultural resources. Since the discovery, countless hours have been spent working with the San Luis Rey Band of Mission Indians (Tribe) to assess and determine the necessary efforts consistent with Council Policy 83 (Tribal Cultural Resource Protection) and the city’s Tribal, Cultural and Paleontological Resource Guidelines. As a condition of closing out the project city council granted Cultural Resource Conservation Easement, in accordance with California Civil Code section 815, to the Tribe, and all efforts to repatriate the sensitive materials have now been completed. Thanks to Public Works, Parks & Recreation, Community & Economic Development and the City Attorney’s office for the collaborative contributions during this long and complicated process.
Club Carlsbad
Last Friday, over 100 middle school students descended upon Pine Avenue Community Center from Aviara, Calavera, and Valley Middle Schools for the inaugural Club Carlsbad dance. The Valentine’s-themed dance featured a DJ with light show, cool contests, Snapchat photo booths, and creative crafts with computer and digital games. Parents were thrilled to bring their teens to a safe and supervised setting, knowing they could enjoy socializing with friends while having fun. Teens can explore, hangout, and enjoy the Pine Avenue Community Center upstairs activity room seven days a week. The next Club Carlsbad dance is on Friday, March 1.
