Second Season of Starring Artists Launches with Langston Hughes Tribute In honor of Black History Month, Cultural Arts launched the second season of Starring Artists last Saturday in the Ruby G. Schulman Auditorium. Dr. Ron McCurdy’s The Langston Hughes Project, a multimedia concert performance of Hughes’ kaleidoscopic jazz poem suite, Ask Your Mama: 12 Moods for Jazz, delighted the audience with a mix of biographical information, exploration of poetry and performance of jazz. Written in the early 1960s, Hughes’s poetic work is a homage in verse and music to the struggle for artistic and social freedom at home and abroad. It is a twelve-part epic poem which Hughes scored with musical cues drawn from blues, gospel, boogie woogie, Latin “cha-cha,” Afro-Cuban mambo music and West Indian calypso; a creative masterwork left unperformed at his death. In the first half of the program, host Nina Garin, Arts Calendar Editor and Producer at KPBS, guided a lively discussion between McCurdy and the audience. The next Starring Artist on Saturday, March 30 showcases the talents of international folk singer Uxia. Starring Artists is sponsored by the Carlsbad Friends of the Arts.
