Library Learning Center Celebrates 10-Year Anniversary August 23 marks the 10-year anniversary of the Carlsbad City Library Learning Center. The Library Learning Center, located at 3368 Eureka Place, was the third library to open its doors in Carlsbad and serves nearly 5,000 children, teens and adults each month. The Library Learning Center features a Spanish, English and bilingual library collection for all ages. Approximately 30 free programs in English and Spanish are offered each month, including story times, homework help, concerts, teen events, ESL classes and a Spanish-language book club.
More Positions Filled in Library & Cultural Arts Department Andrea Hilliard has been promoted to Lead Librarian for Reference Services at Dove Library. In the six years Andrea has worked for the Carlsbad City Library she has demonstrated her strong technical knowledge, initiative, project management, team building and communication skills. As the Technology Librarian, Andrea successfully managed the public computing environment, supervised and trained computer lab staff and advocated for public service requests on the library’s behalf. Her supervisory and management skills are apparent in the development and success of the Exploration HUB. Prior to her position with the Carlsbad City Library, Andrea was a medical librarian at Mary Washington Healthcare, providing service for an integrated health system of hospitals, clinics and behavioral health. She also worked as the cataloger for the Hickam Air Force Base Library in Hawaii.
Stellaluna Exhibition Closes with Special Event The popular Janell Cannon: Stellaluna exhibition in the city’s Cannon Art Gallery closed on Sunday. The exhibition featured the artwork of former city employee and children’s book author and illustrator Janell Cannon on the 25th anniversary of the publication of her beloved book. Stellaluna has been translated into nearly 30 languages and is now reaching its second generation of readers. On Saturday, Janell gave a talk to an audience of 70 about her travels in Africa to find the bat that inspired Stellaluna. Following the talk, she signed books for her fans of all ages.
Library Movie Night Special Guest During the library’s regular movie night this week, the audience of 100 was surprised by a special guest speaker at the event. The featured film, Hostiles, was about an Army captain transporting a Native American family back to tribal lands. The Native American consultant on the film is a Carlsbad resident, and she attended the movie night and spoke with the audience about her experience working on the film.
Carlsbad Music Festival
This weekend marks the 15th annual three-day Carlsbad Music Festival, a celebration of “adventurous music by the beach.” The Parks & Recreation Department recently permitted the community event which starts Friday and continues through Sunday featuring creative music performances in outdoor and indoor spaces throughout the Village area. Details are available on the Carlsbad Music Festival website. The festival is supported in part by a City of Carlsbad Community Arts Grant.
Fiesta at the Rancho
Last Friday, the Friends of Carrillo Ranch, and the City of Carlsbad Parks & Recreation and Library & Cultural Arts Departments partnered to fundraise for the 2018-19 California history and art program at Leo Carrillo Ranch Historic Park. Nearly 200 people attended the Fiesta, and enjoyed an extensive silent auction, Spanish buffet, live Flamenco music and dance performances, and created their own unique Intax camera art project. Thanks to everyone’s support, the Friends will be able to fully fund the history and art program, providing an outstanding educational experience for more than 1,200 Carlsbad fourth grade students - completely free of charge.
