Walmart Labs Invests in Carlsbad

Last Thursday, Walmart Labs held a grand opening celebration at their new, bigger and better offices at the Make building on Avenida Encinas. Over 100 regional tech leaders joined Mayor Pro Tem Blackburn and tech executives at Walmart for their ribbon cutting ceremony coordinated by Claudia Huerta with Walmart Labs. Then in the afternoon hundreds of talented tech individuals engaged in their networking and recruiting event as the company seeks to fill 120 new tech jobs at their Carlsbad location. The city leveraged the Life in Action brand to promote the day and worked with economic development partners to make sure the entire region came out to show Walmart support for their growth. Halloween in the Village

This Saturday, Carlsbad Village Association will host Halloween in the Village. The Parks & Recreation Department recently permitted the free community event. Bring the whole family to the Village from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. to celebrate Halloween. Activities include crafts, games, a pumpkin patch, photo stations for family photos and trick-or-treating throughout the Village at participating businesses.


Pumpkin Plunge

Pumpkin Plunge at Alga Norte Community Park was a fun splash last Saturday. Over 250 people joined in celebrating the Halloween season complete with a pumpkin themed bounce house, floating pumpkin patch, Halloween themed pool games and races, floating obstacles, and an outdoor presentation of The Boxtrolls. Every child left the event with fun prizes and their very own pumpkin harvested from the Floating Pumpkin Patch.


Harbor Drive Volunteer Trail Maintenance Project

On Saturday, approximately 20 volunteers, including local high school students, put in 45 hours of service by spending the morning cleaning up the beautiful Harbor Drive Trail located on the north shore of Agua Hedionda Lagoon. Amongst the spectacular views of the lagoon and the Pacific Ocean, the group collectively removed and repositioned trail edging and stakes, did erosion repair, cleaned up debris and trimmed a bunch of vegetation along the trail. All their hard work left an instant improvement on the trail for all patrons to enjoy.


Sculpture Garden Exhibition Opened Sunday On Sunday, a new exhibition in the Carlsbad Sculpture Garden by Ron Tatro opened with an artist reception attended by over 70 guests. The exhibition, entitled Ron Tatro: 7 Heads, is a selection of new welded metal works. Tatro, an internationally known sculptor, has created a singular intersection between welded steel and color. This exhibition, expressly created for the Sculpture Garden, features seven of his most recent series, human head forms, welded and then painted. Although he uses a limited color palette, his lasting interest in paint provides a vibrant element to contrast the natural setting. The sculpture garden will be open for this exhibition Monday- Friday 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. from Oct. 22 to August 2019.


Meet the Authors Events at the Library On Thursday, the library hosted author and Union-Tribune language columnist Richard Lederer for a talk on his new book The Joy of Names. On Sunday, the library hosted author Amy Wallen for a talk about her memoir When We Were Ghouls. Attendees enjoyed meeting the authors and having their questions about books, language and writing answered. The final library author event of the year is Nov. 3 and will feature chef and cookbook author Isabel Cruz, who will share her cooking influences and snacks from her new cookbook The Latin Table.


San Diego Music Award-winners Perform at Library San Diego Music Award winners Danny Green Trio Plus Strings performed in the Schulman Auditorium on Saturday. Nearly 150 people enjoyed a performance featuring a mix of classical and jazz music, including original compositions.


Celebrate Halloween at the Library For adults looking for Halloween fun next week, the library will host a movie night featuring Into the Woods at the Schulman Auditorium on Oct. 31 at 6 p.m. Youth have a variety of programs to choose from. First up is a Hallo-Tween Bash on Oct. 29 at 3:30 p.m. for grades 4–6 at Cole Library. At Dove on Oct. 30 at 3:30 p.m. kids in kindergarten through fifth grade can attend Terrific Tuesday–Harry Potter Halloween for a celebration Hogwarts style. And kindergarteners through third graders can learn about the Science of Halloween on Oct. 30 at 3:30 p.m. at Cole Library by creating bubbling ghosts and experimenting with a creepy magnetic phantom. Teens are invited to visit the Library Learning Center for the Circus of Evil Escape Room on Oct. 26 at 3:30 p.m. (sign-ups required). Learn more online.


Three New Community Services Officers Attend Riverside Academy

The trio, Holly Martinez Nina Chase and Dee Dee Spangler attend a two-week CSO academy. The academy teaches police services and procedures including personal safety, first aid, report writing and other necessary skills. CSOs help support the Police Department in several ways from taking crime reports to collecting evidence at crime scenes.


Pedestrians Don’t Have Armor Campaign

The Police Department’s Traffic Unit joined the California Officer of Traffic Safety to promote pedestrian safety. The campaigned encourages pedestrian safety to include walking while distracted. Officers and members of the Senior Volunteer Patrol spent time at busy intersections talking to community members and handing out tips.


Crime Fighter of the Quarter Named

At a quarterly Crime Analysis and Response meeting, Officer Fawsi Murra was named crime fighter of the quarter. Murra received the award for his work investigating and preventing crime, and appending criminals.
