Cultural Arts Launches Front Row Fridays Series In response to community feedback during the Arts & Culture Master Plan including significant interest in greater interaction with artists, the Cultural Arts team created a new performing arts series titled Front Row Fridays, scheduled on the second Friday of each month. The series kicked off last Friday in the Schulman Auditorium with a season preview by the San Diego Ballet. Narrated by San Diego Ballet Artistic Director Javier Velasco, the evening included excerpts from five upcoming productions including the world premiere of a new ballet based on The Jungle Book which performs this weekend in San Diego. In addition to the performance, Velasco offered insights on terminology, training and choreography. With over 160 in attendance, the evening was capped off by a lively Q&A with Velasco and six dancers. The evening concluded with an unexpected interactive experience for the children in the audience who were invited onstage to learn several ballet positions and be photographed with the dancers. The next Front Row Friday is Nov. 9 featuring Missy Anderson, a blues, soul and R&B vocalist accompanied by her husband, Heine Andersen.

Another Dove Library Café Milestone Reached Very early on Monday morning, the power at Dove Library was shut down entirely in order to activate the electric transformer and panels that will serve the future café. Not as simple as it might sound, critical systems were powered down and then restored successfully once the work was complete, all before the library opened to the public. A big thank you to staff from Public Works, City I.T., Community & Economic Development and Library Business Systems for collaborating and planning this effort. The café is expected to open in early 2019.
