Be the Boss Program Hosts its First Graduation

In collaboration with San Diego Tech Hub, Walmart Labs, and the Vista Unified School District, four high school students completed the beta test group for a passion entrepreneurship internship program called Be the Boss. The students were paired with mentors and met over six weeks to develop their passion to start their own businesses. The students learned about how to make an elevator pitch, conduct market research, plan financials and brand themselves and their company, all while working to improve leadership and public speaking skills every week. City economic development staff developed this pilot program with Walmart Labs, with plans to expand the program throughout the Innovate78 region and beyond. Programs like these helps encourage entrepreneurship among youth that don’t have access to resources through personal connections.

Village H Property South Trail Improvements

The requisite maintenance and trail improvement work on the southern section of the Village H property began on May 8, 2019, the day after the property’s deed was recorded. Substantial effort was placed on the trimming and selective removal of Eucalyptus trees, minor re-grading of the trail surface, installation of trail delineation post and rail fencing, and weed abatement. Additional accomplishments included the installation of trail amenities, regulatory signs and the painting of the perimeter fencing. Staff completed all work and the trail was opened to the public ahead of schedule on Aug. 2, 2019.

Supporting Junior Lifeguards

Fire Department personnel had the opportunity to meet with future lifeguards during the City of Carlsbad’s Junior Lifeguard Camp at Alga Norte Aquatic Center. During their visit, personnel shared valuable information on daily operations and responsibilities of the department, including emergency response, training and community outreach. The junior lifeguards also received hands-on demonstration of apparatus and equipment and learned about the maintenance requirements for emergency response. This event provided a great opportunity for personnel to support Carlsbad’s future lifeguards.

Hazardous Materials Preparation Response Course

City staff hosted the Sustainable Workplace Alliance, 3-day Hazardous Materials Preparation Response course last week at the Safety Training Center. Hazardous materials response can be a fast and fluid challenge for all first responders. During this three-day class, students from 23 different organizations studied the basics of HAZMAT terminology, proper selection and use of personal protective equipment and methods to safely respond or deploy assets to hazardous materials incidents. Students shared ideas and networked while also discussing the development of written response plans. Each student was trained to conduct proper fit testing for respirators, and the correct selection of protective equipment worn during an emergency response. By the end of the course, all students gained the knowledge necessary to instruct other employees in their respective organizations on hazardous materials response and safety protocols to mitigate the impacts of a hazardous materials incident.
