Next Steps for New Lagoon Trail Approved

The Carlsbad City Council has approved adding the Hub Park trail to the city’s “Capital Improvement Program,” a long term plan for major city construction projects. The 2.4 mile trail is on land owned by SDG&E. The city has a 1975 lease agreement with SDG&E for a portion of the trail, but not the part that connects to nearby roads.

Progress Continues on Evaluating a New City Hall and Civic Center Location

As the City of Carlsbad pursues a plan to build a new city hall and civic center, the City Council accepted two reports Tuesday night outlining the square footage needed for the new project and criteria most important to residents and city staff in selecting a new location.


Village and Barrio Street Lighting and Traffic Circles Update

City Council received an update on the status of the Barrio Street Lighting and Village and Barrio Traffic Circles projects on Tuesday night. Street and pedestrian lighting installations are planned for the Barrio neighborhood to improve safety and walkability. Street lights are taller and improve visibility primarily for drivers, pedestrians and bicyclists. Pedestrian lights are shorter and improve lighting along walkways.

Parks & Recreation Commission Vacancy

The City of Carlsbad is seeking residents interested in filling an unscheduled vacancy on the City of Carlsbad Parks & Recreation commission. Applications for this volunteer positions are available on the city’s website or in the City Clerk’s Office, 1200 Carlsbad Village Drive. Applications must be submitted to the City Clerk's Office by noon on Friday, Oct. 18.


City completes updated plans for water, wastewater and recycled water – rates to remain among the lowest in the region

The City of Carlsbad and its subsidiary agency the Carlsbad Municipal Water District will hold a hearing Nov. 19 to consider changes that, if approved, will keep rates in Carlsbad among the lowest in the region.

Upcoming District 1 City Council Vacancy

City Council Member Barbara Hamilton announced plans at the Sept. 10 City Council meeting to step down from her seat effective Oct. 31. According to the Carlsbad Municipal Code, which is a collection of the city’s laws, vacancies can be filled by City Council appointment or an election.

Analysis Continues for Lowering the Railroad Tracks through Northern Carlsbad

The Carlsbad City Council received an update from the San Diego Association of Governments (SANDAG) on the Sept.10 City Council meeting, on a future project to potentially lower the railroad tracks in Carlsbad’s downtown railroad corridor. In anticipation of train traffic doubling through Carlsbad by 2035, a second set of train tracks will need to be built alongside the existing tracks.

Veteran's Park Workshop 9/21

Draft conceptual park plans will be shared with the public at an upcoming community workshop for feedback. An online survey will be available after the workshop for those who cannot attend or just prefer to provide input that way.


Ansel Adams Exhibit at Cannon Art Gallery Opens 9/22

The City of Carlsbad presents Ansel Adams: Early Works art exhibit at William D. Cannon Art Gallery, located at the Carlsbad City Library complex at 1775 Dove Lane. The exhibit features intimate master prints from the 1920s through the 50s depicting Adams’ transition from pictorialism to straight photography and provides a fresh look at this legendary master of the American landscape..

Volunteer for National Public Lands Day, 9/28

The City of Carlsbad will celebrate National Public Lands Day with a volunteer trail cleanup at Rancho Carrillo Trail on Saturday, Sept. 28, from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m.

Poinsettia COASTER Station Construction Continues

As part of the Poinsettia Station Improvements Project, construction crews will perform weekend work on Saturday, Sept. 21 & 28, and Saturday, Oct. 5 & 12, from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. in the City of Carlsbad. Crews will continue retaining wall construction progress on both the eastern and western sides of the station, electrical, fiber optic, fence and related construction activities for the new Poinsettia Station pedestrian undercrossing.

Night at the Library Gala, 9/21

The Carlsbad Library & Arts Foundation is celebrating its 20th anniversary Sept. 21 with a special “Night at the Library” gala featuring a live musical performance by award-winning singer, dancer and actor Elijah Rock. The evening begins with cocktails at 5:30 p.m. followed by Mr. Rock’s performance in the Carlsbad City Library’s Schulman Auditorium and a unique dining experience within the library, located at 1775 Dove Lane.

Super Heroes Wanted for Obstacle Race, 10/6

Adventure seeking families can dress up like super heroes and come out to the sixth annual Super Hero Obstacle Race on Sunday, Oct. 6 from 8 to 11 a.m. at Alga Norte Community Park, 6565 Alicante Road. Parents and children will run together through a super hero themed 2K obstacle course while dressed in costumes.

2020 Community Arts Grants Opportunities

The City of Carlsbad’s Cultural Arts Office is kicking off its 2020 Community Arts Grants application cycle with two informational sessions on Sept. 4 and 16. New applicants are strongly encouraged to attend to learn about program guidelines and the application process. Participants may attend either session. The grant application deadline is Monday, Oct. 14, 2019 at 4 p.m.
