Labor Day City Service Schedule
In observance of Labor Day, city offices will be closed Monday, Sept. 2. A full holiday schedule for city services is listed below.

New Plan Will Increase City Trails to 100+ Miles
A new trails plan was adopted by the City Council Tuesday, laying out a long term approach for maximizing the city’s extensive network of walking, jogging and biking paths throughout Carlsbad. The document, which includes maps showing future trails, is available on the city’s website.
An Updated Plan for Caring for the City’s Trees
The City of Carlsbad has updated its Community Forest Management Plan, a document that describes how the city cares for its existing trees and will increase its overall “forest canopy.” Trees provide such benefits as:
· Shade and energy conservation
· Habitat for wild animals
Grilling Safety Tips
With Labor Day weekend approaching, the City of Carlsbad Fire Department reminds residents considering firing up their grills to follow these important safety tips:
· Wear clothing and accessories that are appropriate for grilling, including gloves, an apron and sunglasses, which will keep smoke and any food splatter out of your eyes
Carlsbad Approves New Plan to Promote More Sustainable Management of Waste
A comprehensive new approach to using and reusing materials more productively over their entire life cycles thus reducing the amount of greenhouse gas emissions coming from landfills was presented to the Carlsbad City Council Aug. 20, along with an overview of new state laws and goals for reducing the overall waste stream.
Back to School Safety
It is back to school time again for Carlsbad’s children and the City of Carlsbad Police Department would like to partner with parents on back to school safety. Here are some safety tips:

2020 Community Arts Grants Opportunities
The City of Carlsbad’s Cultural Arts Office is kicking off its 2020 Community Arts Grants application cycle with two information sessions in September. New applicants are strongly encouraged to attend to learn about program guidelines and the application process. Participants may attend either session. The grant application deadline is Monday, Oct. 14, 2019 at 4 p.m.
Super Heroes Wanted for Obstacle Race, 10/6
Adventure seeking families can dress up like super heroes and come out to the sixth annual Super Hero Obstacle Race on Sunday, Oct. 6 from 8 to 11 a.m. at Alga Norte Community Park, 6565 Alicante Road. Parents and children will run together through a super hero themed 2K obstacle course while dressed in costumes.
Village and Barrio Master Plan Update
The City Council held a public hearing on Aug. 20 and voted to accept the 23 modifications suggested by the California Coastal Commission to the Village and Barrio Master Plan and Local Coastal Program. The City Council also asked staff to come back with a work plan and resourcing strategy for how they can consider making potential changes to address future issues including:
Community Choice Energy Update
The Carlsbad City Council voted on Aug. 20 to initiate negotiations with the cities of Del Mar, Encinitas and other potential partner agencies to create a new Community Choice Energy joint powers authority that would provide an option for local customers to purchase power that is at least 50% from renewable sources.
Commuter Shuttle Service Launches
The Carlsbad Connector, an on-demand shuttle service that transports commuters between the Carlsbad Poinsettia COASTER Station and workplaces in Carlsbad, officially launched. As the first program of its kind in San Diego County, the pilot service is designed to increase COASTER ridership by providing a flexible and convenient solution to bridge the gap between the station and the city’s primary industrial and commercial cores.
Call to Artists: Art Exhibit Opportunities
The City of Carlsbad’s Library & Cultural Arts Department is seeking artists to exhibit their works next year at Carlsbad city libraries. The call is open to all artists. “We display works of artists in our libraries to capture their vision and share their talents,” said Curator of Exhibitions Karen McGuire.
