Community Discussion on Homelessness, 8/28
The Carlsbad City Council Ad Hoc Subcommittee on Homelessness will hold a town hall meeting Wednesday, Aug. 28, from 6 to 9 p.m., to discuss homelessness in Carlsbad, including the city’s current homeless response plan, how homelessness affects community members and what residents can do to support the city’s response.
State of the City Event, 8/26
Carlsbad residents are invited to a free showing of the 2019 State of the City video presentation, highlighting key projects and initiatives, city priorities and future planning. Immediately following the video presentation, there will be an opportunity to talk with City Council members and staff and ask questions about city topics, current and future projects.
Upcoming City Council Agenda Topics
The agenda for the next City Council meeting is now available. Topics will include:
· Approval of the Trails Master Plan, which identifies future additions to the citywide trails system.
· A proposed second story addition to Fresco restaurant, located on Carlsbad Village Drive, just west of Carlsbad Boulevard.
· A proposed brewery and tasting room on State Street in the Village. (This item was originally scheduled for Aug. 20, but was continued.)
· Discussion of options for an independent audit of The Crossings at Carlsbad Golf Course.
· A new policy about how “surplus” funds can be spent – money that is left unspent at the end of a budget year.
Carlsbad Approves New Plan to Promote More Sustainable Management of Waste
A comprehensive new approach to using and reusing materials more productively over their entire life cycles thus reducing the amount of greenhouse gas emissions coming from landfills was presented to the Carlsbad City Council Aug. 20, along with an overview of new state laws and goals for reducing the overall waste stream.
Village and Barrio Master Plan Update
The City Council held a public hearing on Tuesday night and voted to accept the 23 modifications suggested by the California Coastal Commission to the Village and Barrio Master Plan and Local Coastal Program. The City Council also asked staff to come back with a work plan and resourcing strategy for how they can consider making potential changes to address future issues including:
Public Invited to Symposium on City Infrastructure Financing
Increasing construction costs, population growth and ongoing maintenance needs, among other challenges, have made infrastructure financing a hot topic in state, federal and local government circles. To learn about the latest trends and tools and help inform the community, the Carlsbad City Council will hold a special meeting about city infrastructure financing Thursday, Aug. 29, from 1 to 4 p.m. in the City Council Chamber, 1200 Carlsbad Village Drive.
Community Choice Energy Update
The Carlsbad City Council voted Tuesday to initiate negotiations with the cities of Del Mar, Encinitas and other potential partner agencies to create a new Community Choice Energy joint powers authority that would provide an option for local customers to purchase power that is at least 50% from renewable sources.
Commuter Shuttle Service Launches
The Carlsbad Connector, an on-demand shuttle service that transports commuters between the Carlsbad Poinsettia COASTER Station and workplaces in Carlsbad, officially launched today. As the first program of its kind in San Diego County, the pilot service is designed to increase COASTER ridership by providing a flexible and convenient solution to bridge the gap between the station and the city’s primary industrial and commercial cores.
2020 Community Arts Grants Opportunities
The City of Carlsbad’s Cultural Arts Office is kicking off its 2020 Community Arts Grants application cycle with two information sessions in September. New applicants are strongly encouraged to attend to learn about program guidelines and the application process. Participants may attend either session. The grant application deadline is Monday, Oct. 14, 2019 at 4 p.m.
Back to School Safety
It is back to school time again for Carlsbad’s children and the City of Carlsbad Police Department would like to partner with parents on back to school safety. Here are some safety tips:
· Model safe driving habits for your children
· Remember the basic safety rules
· Talk with children about the importance of traffic safety
Super Heroes Wanted for Obstacle Race, 10/6
Adventure seeking families can dress up like super heroes and come out to the sixth annual Super Hero Obstacle Race on Sunday, Oct. 6 from 8 to 11 a.m. at Alga Norte Community Park, 6565 Alicante Road. Parents and children will run together through a super hero themed 2K obstacle course while dressed in costumes.
Leo Carrillo Film Festival Begins 8/23
Enjoy nostalgic entertainment under the stars at the 15th annual Leo Carrillo Ranch Film Festival. See rare historic films from the Golden Age of Hollywood featuring Leo Carrillo and others, at the star's legendary ranch. The Leo Carrillo Historic Park, located at 6200 Flying LC Lane and once owned by actor and conservationist Leo Carrillo, features handcrafted adobe buildings, antique windmills, a reflecting pool and many other beautiful historic structures, and is the perfect backdrop for this free outdoor film festival.
Call to Artists: Art Exhibit Opportunities
The City of Carlsbad’s Library & Cultural Arts Department is seeking artists to exhibit their works next year at Carlsbad city libraries. The call is open to all artists. “We display works of artists in our libraries to capture their vision and share their talents,” said Curator of Exhibitions Karen McGuire.

Applications for these volunteer positions are available on the city’s website or in the City Clerk’s Office, 1200 Carlsbad Village Drive. Applications must be submitted to the City Clerk's Office by noon on Monday, Aug. 26.
Senior Commission Vacancies
The City of Carlsbad is seeking residents interested in filling two scheduled vacancies on the City of Carlsbad Senior Commission. Applications for this volunteer position are available on the city’s website or in the City Clerk’s Office, 1200 Carlsbad Village Drive. Applications must be submitted to the City Clerk's Office by noon on Monday, Aug. 26.
