Online Public Input Is Underway for Lowering the Railroad Tracks Through Northern Carlsbad
On Nov. 20, nearly 100 community members attended a public input workshop with the City of Carlsbad, San Diego Association of Governments and North County Transit District to learn about a project to lower the railroad tracks through the Village and Barrio and provide feedback. An online public input survey is also open until Dec. 13.
Local Coastal Program Comment Period Extended
The City of Carlsbad released an update to the Local Coastal Program, a plan for how land can be used in the coastal zone. The draft plan is available for public review and comment. The comment period has been extended to Jan. 31, 2020. An informational meeting was held on Oct. 29, 2019, to provide an overview of the updates made to the plan and answer questions. Read more
Tree Removal Explained
A dead 60-foot-tall eucalyptus tree near the corner of Grand Avenue and Jefferson Street in Carlsbad Village has been removed due to potential public safety concerns. Under a new plan approved by the City Council, the city plants two trees for every tree that needs to be removed. Read more
North County Transit District Agreement with Police Department
The City of Carlsbad and North County Transit District have agreed to authorize Carlsbad police officers to enforce transit district ordinances at the district’s two train stations located in the city, filling an enforcement gap. The North County Transit District operates the Carlsbad Village and Poinsettia train stations in Carlsbad, and because NCTD is itself a public agency, it has authority to enforce its ordinances on its property. The City of Carlsbad has renewed a longstanding agreement with the Carlsbad Unified School District to ensure the safety of school students and staff by providing three school resource police officers to work on campuses during the school year. The Carlsbad Police Department assigns one officer to each of the district’s two secondary schools, with one at Carlsbad High and the other at Sage Creek High. Read more
Grant Will Help Police Improve Traffic Safety
The City of Carlsbad Police Department has received a grant of $90,000 from the California Office of Traffic Safety to implement programs designed to improve traffic safety and reduce traffic deaths and injuries throughout the city. In awarding the grants, the state Office of Traffic Safety compares a city’s traffic safety statistics with those of similar sized cities in a program called Selective Traffic Enforcement, which identifies problem areas and targets them for corrective action. As the holiday season begins, the Police Department is asking the community to join forces to prevent holiday package theft. In the modern age of online shopping, more and more packages are shipped directly to neighborhoods. This number greatly increases during the holiday season and with it comes an increase in package thefts. Read more
Five Tips to Avoid a Visit From the Plumber This Season
Unless a plumber is on the guest list, the City of Carlsbad urges residents to take care when disposing of greasy food scraps this holiday season, or risk expensive and messy sewer pipe backups. Soap, detergents and bleach only temporarily cut the grease. Fat, oil and grease eventually attach to the walls of sewer pipes. Buildup of grease in sewer pipes is the number one cause of sewage spills. Read more
Holiday at the Rancho, 12/7
Blending holiday spirit with a bit of western history, the City of Carlsbad will celebrate the season at its Holiday at the Rancho event Saturday, Dec. 7, from 5 to 8 p.m., at Leo Carrillo Ranch Historic Park, located at 6200 Flying L.C. Lane. The event will feature a 14-foot tree lighting, train rides, a plush snowball fight, crafts, face painting, holiday shopping, cookie decorating and more. Read more
