Thanksgiving Holiday City Service Schedule

In observance of Thanksgiving, city offices will be closed Thursday, Nov. 28 and Friday, Nov. 29. There is no impact to emergency services.

New California Housing Laws

In an effort to address the lack of affordable housing in California, the state legislature has passed a number of new laws that will significantly decrease the City of Carlsbad’s ability to control how and where new housing is approved, according to a recent presentation by the city’s government relations representatives.

Water, Wastewater Rates to Remain Among Lowest in Region

Following new water and wastewater rates approved this week, Carlsbad residents will continue to have some of the lowest bills in the region.


The City of Carlsbad is served by three different water districts. The Carlsbad Municipal Water District serves the majority of the city. Members of the Carlsbad City Council also serve as the board of directors for the water district.

New Permit Process Approved for Protests, Demonstrations and Other “Expressive Activities”

The Carlsbad City Council approved a new permit process for protests, demonstrations and other events that fall under the category of “expressive activities” on city property, such as parks or city hall.

Community Choice Aggregation Draft Plan Review

The Clean Energy Alliance, a Joint Powers Authority between the cities of Carlsbad, Del Mar and Solana Beach, reviewed a draft of its Community Choice Aggregation Implementation Plan and Statement of Intent on Nov. 19, staying on track for a community choice energy program launch in 2021.

The City of Carlsbad's Winter 2019/Spring 2020 Community Services Guide is now available for online viewing. Registration opens Wednesday, Dec. 11.


Special Election, 3/3

The City of Carlsbad will hold a special election March 3, 2020, to fill the District 1 City Council vacancy created by the resignation of Council Member Barbara Hamilton, whose term expires in November 2022.


Holiday at the Rancho, 12/7

Blending holiday spirit with a bit of western history, the City of Carlsbad will celebrate the season at its Holiday at the Rancho event Saturday, Dec. 7, from 5 to 8 p.m., at Leo Carrillo Ranch Historic Park, located at 6200 Flying L.C. Lane. The event will feature a 14-foot tree lighting, train rides, a plush snowball fight, crafts, face painting, holiday shopping, cookie decorating and more.


New Artwork on Display at Libraries

The City of Carlsbad libraries offer an active exhibit program with the primary mission of showcasing the work of artists residing in San Diego’s North County and sharing the visual arts experience with visitors of all ages. The latest display at Dove Library features the works of mixed media artist, Penny Friedman. At Cole Library, the works of impressionistic realism painter Catherine Clancy are currently on display.
