Fire Danger: Santa Ana Conditions

With warm weather and Santa Ana winds forecast through the next few days, City of Carlsbad public safety officials remind the public to take precautions. Avoid any activity that could lead to sparks near a wild land environment or open space.

Columbus Day City Service Schedule

In observance of Columbus Day, city offices will be closed Monday, Oct. 14. A full holiday schedule for city services is listed below:

City offices: Closed

Emergency services: Regular service

Trash pickup: Regular service, no delay

District 1 Council Vacancy

At the Oct. 8 City Council meeting, City Council Member Barbara Hamilton announced her intention to amend her original last day of Oct. 31 to instead be effective immediately. Her official letter of resignation, which is required, was received Oct. 9. The District 1 City Council seat is now vacant, which triggers a 60 day period during which the City Council can appoint someone to fulfill the rest of the term or call for an election to fill the remainder of the term. Under the Carlsbad Municipal Code, during the 60 days, if 10 percent of District 1 voters sign a petition, the City Council must fill the vacancy by an election.

Carlsbad Approves Community Choice Energy

The Carlsbad City Council gave the green light Tuesday night to create a Community Choice Aggregation program and establish a Joint Powers Authority called the Clean Energy Alliance. The City Council’s support will give Carlsbad community members a choice of where their energy comes from and help the city achieve its Climate Action Plan goals to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

Updated Land Use Plan for Coastal Zone

The City of Carlsbad has released an update to the Local Coastal Program, a plan for how land can be used in the coastal zone. The draft plan is now available for public review and comment.


Invasive Weed Eradication Program Approved

Carlsbad City Council approved on Tuesday a program to eradicate a highly invasive plant, Ward’s weed. Ward’s Weed is a threat to native habitats, protected plant and animal species, and recreational and agricultural areas in Carlsbad.


Public Safety Open House, 10/12

On Saturday, Oct. 12, the City of Carlsbad will host the annual Public Safety Open House. The open house will be from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., at the Safety Training Center located at 5750 Orion St. in Carlsbad. The open house will celebrate “Fire Prevention Week” and “Crime Prevention Month.”

Pumpkin Plunge at Alga Norte Aquatic Center, 10/19

Enjoy Halloween themed pool activities and games during the City of Carlsbad’s Pumpkin Plunge at Alga Norte Aquatic Center at 6565 Alicante Road on Saturday, Oct. 19 starting at 5 p.m.


October is Arts & Humanities Month

The City of Carlsbad’s Cultural Arts fall season is designed to coincide with October as National Arts & Humanities Month, the largest annual celebration for arts and humanities in the nation. As a coast-to-coast collective recognition of the importance of culture in America, National Arts & Humanities Month was launched by Americans for the Arts and national arts partners.

Public Advisory Committee Applications

The City of Carlsbad is seeking applications to fill resident and at-large positions on a public advisory group recently authorized to help update the city’s “Housing Element.” The Housing Element is a plan for how the city will accommodate its housing needs. All California cities are required to have a plan and update it every eight years.


Poinsettia COASTER Station Construction Continues

In addition, starting on Monday, Oct. 14 through Nov. 12, construction crews will perform platform announcement and speaker testing. Crews will install and calibrate new “smart” speakers throughout Poinsettia Station that will have self-adjusting volume levels based on surrounding ambient noise levels.

October Holiday Celebrations at Your Libraries

Carlsbad City Library is hosting holiday themed events for all ages at all three library locations during October. Admission is free, and seating is first come, first served. Signups are required as noted for some events.
