First City Council Meeting of the Year, 1/14

City Council’s first meeting of the year is next Tuesday and topics include:

· Report on city investments

· Affordable housing unit purchase

· Approval of new small cell sites on city-owned street lights

· Changes to the labor agreement with firefighters

· Updates to city’s affordable housing rules and priorities for awarding grands with federal housing money

· Results of a recent survey about what’s important to Carlsbad residents

· Connected Carlsbad innovation roadmap

· City Council assignments for regional committees

· Annual Work plans for the Arts, Historic Preservation, Library, Senior, Parks & Rec, Beach Preservation

· Purchase of open space land near Kelly Elementary School


Annual Homeless Count Volunteers Sought

The City of Carlsbad’s Homeless Outreach Team invites residents to volunteer the morning of Jan. 23 for the annual “Point-in-Time” count, part of a nationwide effort to document the number of people experiencing homelessness.


Join the Winter Reading Challenge

Carlsbad City Library is kicking of the New Year with the Winter Reading Challenge for all ages, between Jan. 1 and Jan. 31. Carlsbad’s collective community reading goal for January 2020 is 125,000 minutes. Participation is free.


Rail Work Scheduled for Jan. 11-12

This weekend all COASTER and Amtrak Pacific Surfliner services along the San Diego segment of the Los Angeles-San Diego-San Luis Obispo coastal rail corridor will be suspended due to a planned Absolute Work Window.


City Seeking Nominations for Citizen of the Year

The City of Carlsbad is now accepting applications for Citizen of the Year, an annual award recognizing Carlsbad residents who have provided outstanding service to their community. Nominations will be accepted through January 31.


Meet the Author Events, 1/19, 1/27 & 1/30

Carlsbad City Library is hosting three “Meet the Author” events in January. Admission is free and seating is first come, first served.


Boot Camp for Business Workshops, 2/4, 2/11 & 2/18

Carlsbad City Library will host its free Boot Camp for Business workshops on Feb. 4, 11 and 18. Learn tips and tricks to develop skills that will help your business succeed with free workshops presented by experts.


Christmas Tree Recycling

This is the last week to take advantage of free curbside pickup or drop off bin locations for Christmas trees. The trees will be recycled and converted into mulch that will be used throughout San Diego County.


How to Get Rid of Old Electronics

The holidays often bring new gadgets. Before you throw out your old cellphones, televisions and computers, remember that e-waste must be kept separate from regular trash. The City of Carlsbad offers several options for disposing of e-waste that are convenient and help protect the environment.


Clean Energy Alliance

The Clean Energy Alliance, a Joint Powers Authority working to implement a Community Choice Energy program in San Diego’s North County region, approved the adoption of its Implementation Plan and Statement of Intent at a public hearing on Dec. 19. Community Choice Energy is a model that allows communities to purchase power to meet their electricity needs, offering an alternative to the traditional SDG&E model.
