City Council Meeting Agenda for 1/28

We’re back at City Hall (and back to 6 p.m. start time) for next week’s City Council meeting (Jan. 28). Among the items on the agenda …

· Affordable housing

· Village parking and a proposed new project on Grand and Jefferson

· Latest on effort to update the local coastal land use plan to make it consistent with the city’s overall plan (“general plan”)

· California State Parks’ recent request for proposals to provide recreation and concession services on state-owned beaches in Carlsbad

· Appointment of the mayor pro tem


New State Housing Laws

The Carlsbad City Council held a workshop Jan. 21 on changes in state housing laws created in response to what has been described as a statewide housing crisis. The laws generally take discretion away from cities when it comes to approving new housing, with the goal of making it easier, quicker and less expensive for projects to get built.

Community Supports Annual Count

Nearly 50 Carlsbad residents got an early start Thursday logging as many as 10,000 steps before 6 a.m. as they volunteered for the annual Point in Time count of people experiencing homelessness in Carlsbad.


The event is part of a nationwide effort to learn about and document homelessness to help inform strategies to address it, including how resources are allocated.

Planning Commission Vacancy

The City of Carlsbad is seeking residents interested in filling a scheduled vacancy on the City of Carlsbad Planning Commission for a four year term. Applications for this volunteer position are available on the city’s website or in the City Clerk’s Office, 1200 Carlsbad Village Drive. Applications must be submitted to the City Clerk's Office by noon on Feb. 17.


Public Invited to Share Feedback About Group Homes

The City of Carlsbad wants to hear from residents who have input to share about group homes, also known as residential care facilities. Group homes are designed to provide a supportive environment for people requiring some type of care, such as children, the elderly, and people who have chronic illnesses or mental disabilities, and people who are recovering from or being treated for alcohol or drug addictions.


Latest Resident Survey Shows Importance of City Issues

Preservation of open space, managing growth and supporting small businesses were among the most important issues to Carlsbad residents according to a new survey presented to the Carlsbad City Council Jan. 14.


Census 2020 Information

Every 10 years, the U.S. Constitution requires a count of the nation’s population to determine the number of congressional representatives for each state. The government also uses census data to distribute an estimated $600 billion dollars in federal funding annually. The next federal census will begin on April 1, 2020.

Last Chance to Nominate a Citizen of the Year

The City of Carlsbad is now accepting applications for Citizen of the Year, an annual award recognizing Carlsbad residents who have provided outstanding service to their community. Nominations will be accepted through January 31.


Meet the Author Events, 1/27 & 1/30

Carlsbad City Library is hosting three “Meet the Author” events in January. Admission is free and seating is first come, first served.

New Hours and Happenings at Library Learning Cente

The Carlsbad City Library Learning Center is now open Saturdays. The Library Learning Center is located at 3368 Eureka Place, across from Holiday Park. Join us for our first Saturday family program, a Lunar New Year Celebration on Jan. 25. Additional volunteer tutor opportunities for the literacy program are also available.
