Alzheimer’s & Brain Awareness Month

June is Alzheimer’s & Brain Awareness Month, and last week the Senior Center held a power of

purple contest with special guest speakers and entertainment for wear purple week. Dr. Daniel Anderson, geriatric psychiatrist, reviewed early signs and symptoms of Alzheimer’s along with the six pillars of prevention to include exercise, social engagement, healthy diet, mental stimulation, quality sleep, and stress management. The Carlsbad Senior Center offers these opportunities for Seniors daily and encourages everyone to practice these preventative practices.




Carlsbad Junior Lifeguard Aquatic Camp


Last week, the Carlsbad Fire Department made a welcomed visit to the Carlsbad Junior Lifeguard Aquatic Camp at Alga Norte Aquatic Center. To the delight of all campers, Carlsbad Fire Fighters shared stories about structure fires, demonstrated how to put on their turn-outs, and gave campers a tour of the apparatus including how it works and what it is used for. Even more exciting, this wasn’t a one-time occurrence! This summer, Carlsbad Fire Fighters will be paying a visit to Junior Lifeguard Campers at Alga Norte Aquatic Center during each session.



Economic Development Supports New Entrepreneurial Internship Program

On June 17, the San Diego Tech Hub launched the Be the Boss Program, a six week entrepreneur summer internship linking high school students from Vista with tech talent. The internship is hosted at the Walmart Labs offices here in Carlsbad. Economic Development staff have supported program and curriculum development, as well as identified partners and resources for the program. Each student is partnered with at least two mentors to take a passion they have and turn it into a viable business. Staff serves as the inclusion pillar lead for San Diego Tech Hub in order to align the organization’s grassroots efforts with larger regional initiatives to broaden the accessibility of innovation jobs to women, minorities and other underrepresented groups in the technology industry. IT Turns Up the Heat With PC Replacement Project

The IT Department celebrated with the thermometer (created by Communications team) to mark progress on our PC replacement project. The project began in May 2018 with a goal to remove, prep and install several hundred PCs and monitors that were due for replacement. The total includes 150+ Library Patron PCs as well as staff PCs and 92 monitors throughout the City. The replacement team, consisting of IT Service Desk staff, PD IT staff and 2 contractors, swapped at least 700 devices. This was a group effort involving several members of the IT department staff.

IT Welcomes New Senior Applications Analyst

This week the IT Team welcomed its newest member, Paul Waldron. Paul has over 20 years of municipal IT experience most recently with the City of San Marcos. Paul was born and grew up Panama, Republic of Panama and moved to Dayton, Ohio in 1988. Despite plans to earn a degree and join the Air Force, he enlisted in the US Navy. While in the Navy he earned his Bachelor’s degree and after departing the service he worked in the health care industry for 6.5 years during which he also earned a Master’s Degree in Business Administration and a certificate in Systems Engineering. In his free time, Paul and his wife enjoy hiking, traveling, good food/wine, DIY home improvement projects and sports.


IT Welcomes New Senor Network Engineer

Alen graduated from San Dieguito High School in 1993 and immediately joined the Navy. His main job in the Navy was to fix computer hardware and run a Mini-Mainframe computer system on the ship. He completed 2 Mediterranean deployments in 5 and a half years with the Navy and then decided to return to civilian life in 1998. Between 1998 and 2011 he worked for a succession of Military contractors like Boeing, Lockheed and TRW (now Northrup Grumman). Alen then decided to focus on Network Engineering in 2002 and has been in that field ever since. In 2011 he moved from Government contract work to private sector support and worked for a Medical Manufacturing company, Jenny Craig, and The UPS Store installing, upgrading and managing their networks.



Coffee with a Cop

As part of the Police Department’s on-going series, officers participated in Coffee with a Cop at the Forum in La Costa. The international program gives the community the opportunity to spend time with officers in a stress-free environment. Officer hang out, answer questions and have agenda-free casual conversation.










Senior Volunteer Patrol Member Recognized

The Police Department recognized Senior Volunteer Patrol member Ron Hogan for his 10k hours of service. Hogan has been a member of the patrol for 17 years. His plan is to continue volunteering for as long as possible. The services of the SVP are invaluable to the Police Department magnifying the department’s ability to provide community service exponentially.
