Technical Rescue Course

Carlsbad Fire Department hosted its first technical rescue course at the Safety Training Center during the dates of May 28 through June 1. The course, Rope Rescue Technician, is a 40-hour course focusing on advanced rope rescue skills in a high-angle environment. The goal is to increase the rescue capability in the San Diego County region with better training and local subject matter experts.

The course was attended by 24 firefighters and 6 instructor trainees from Carlsbad, San Marcos, Escondido and San Diego County/CAL Fire.

Training at Camp Pendleton

Camp Pendleton Fire Department, in cooperation with the US Forest Service, conducted initial attack operations under live-fire conditions. The goal is to provide Company Officers, Engine Operators, Firefighters, and Hand Crew Firefighters the opportunity to enhance their skills in a controlled, live-fire environment. Training was held at Camp Pendleton Marine Corps Base by the Old Navy Hospital.

The training also familiarized fire command-level personnel with the training needed for strike team leader/overhead assignment in preparation for wildfires. Attendees included Carlsbad Fire Department and fire agencies throughout San Diego County, Orange County and Riverside.

Military in Transition

The Carlsbad Fire Department is hosting Military in Transition on June 21, 2019, at the Carlsbad Safety Training Center.

The Military in Transition Firefighter for a Day Program (MITFFAD) is a nonprofit organization which features quarterly events that introduce local military veterans to careers in firefighting and emergency medical services. Attendees are exposed to the process it takes to serve in these disciplines, as well as the rigorous physical requirements of the position. This program is designed to help our veterans find a meaningful career path and employment beyond the military.

Lifeguards Provide Mobile Response Unit

Carlsbad ocean lifeguards are providing a mobile response unit by staffing an off-road utility vehicle on weekends to provide better coverage of resources and provide for more rapid response to northern areas of the beaches where tower coverage is more spread out. The unit will be staffed as need is determined for large beach crowds, surf conditions and on most weekends.

Firefighter Behavioral Wellness and Cancer Awareness Curriculum Cadre

Fire Department personnel are partnering with the Firefighter Behavioral Wellness and Cancer Awareness Curriculum Cadre, to design a training curriculum being offered through the State Fire Marshal’s Office. This is a new education component that addresses the cultural and career issues related to Fire Fighter behavioral health. As 65% of Fire Fighters are facing a cancer diagnosis over the course of their career or in retirement, the Cadre is designing education that will address the exposure risks, mitigating those hazards where possible and increasing cultural awareness through education.

Fire Department personnel Deployed

Fire season has begun in northern California. Fire Department personnel were deployed on June 10th to assist with the Jordan Fire, a wildfire burning in Inyo County. The fire has burned close to 1000 acres with minimal containment.

Fire Explorers Graduation

On Saturday June 8th, the Carlsbad Fire Department hosted the 7th North Zone Fire Explorer Academy Graduation at the Safety Training Center. 43 Fire Explorers, along with their families, celebrated the completion of an intense five-month, every-other-Saturday, Fire Academy. These eager students learned the basics of firefighting, including how to use breathing apparatus, fire hose, ladders, search and rescue, and other technical firefighting skills.

The intergenerational program offered Adults 50+ an opportunity to talk tech with Rose and her talented teen friends. Rose and her tech students all had positive experiences on both sides of the table. According to Rose, “They came in with worried faces and left with smiles.” Impact, passion and challenge are Genius Project objectives, and Rose accomplished all three.

National Trails Day

On June 1, more than 40 people came to Lake Calavera Preserve to celebrate National Trails Day with the Carlsbad community. It was a perfect, cool overcast morning for people to come ready to learn about trails, open space and habitat, and take a naturalist-lead hike around the lake. The hike docents, Diane Nygaard and Rocco Valluzzi from Preserve Calavera, provided in depth information on the local flora and fauna. Participants expressed their admiration and enthusiasm while gazing at the majestic flowers in bloom and wildlife along the trail. At the end of the hike there were a lot of happy smiling faces with one participant saying, “I had no idea there was such a great natural treasure here in the City of Carlsbad.” The open space and trails awareness built through participation in the National Trails Day event reinforces the city’s community values of providing a trail system that ensures the recreational and leisure needs of Carlsbad residents, while supporting the protection and preservation of open space.
