Arbor Day Celebration

Parks & Recreation Department staff celebrated Arbor Day on April 27, by working with approximately 50 local volunteers to plant 35 trees and 40 large shrubs along a section of the Coastal Rail Trail, between Oak Avenue and Tamarack Avenue. The event included tree maintenance representatives from Western Environmental, San Diego Gas & Electric and West Coast Arborists. This event, and the City Council’s Arbor Week proclamation, are two of the four required criteria for Carlsbad to retain its status as a Tree City USA for the 15th consecutive year. The National Arbor Day Foundation Tree City USA designation acknowledges the city’s ongoing commitment to tree care and urban forest sustainability.

📷DEA’s Drug Take Back day a big success.

The Police Department joined the DEA for its Drug Take Back Day. Too often, unused prescription drugs find their way into the wrong hands. That's dangerous and often tragic. That's why it was great to see thousands of folks from across the country clean out their medicine cabinets and turn in - safely and anonymously - a record amount of prescription drugs. In Carlsbad we collected 17 boxes of unwanted and expired prescription medications.

Fire Marshal Addressed Planning Commission

The Fire Marshal was asked to address the Planning Commission this week to explain the fire department’s approach to reviewing proposed projects and buildings during the discretionary review process. The Fire Marshal explained topics such as how Fire department access is measured, how we work with projects where fire access is not compliant with code, number of access points to projects, the impact of the Wildland Urban Interface on development, when fire sprinklers are required, when they aren’t and how they can be used as a mitigation tool in the development process. The Planning Commissioners we’re prepared with many questions that were addressed by the Fire Marshal and the commissioners found the exchange to be very informative.

City-wide EOC Training

Over the past week Emergency Preparedness Manager David Harrison completed EOC staff training. This training is provided each year in preparation for the upcoming exercise. Fire Department Multi-Agency Training

Next week the Carlsbad Fire Department will participate in the San Diego North Zone multi-agency training and will focus on responding to multi-casualty incidents in an active shooter environment. Local fire departments will work together with law enforcement to manage large scale incidents involving active shooters or terrorist style attacks. The training will take place over 6 days at the Del Mar Fairgrounds.

Digital Bulletin Boards Installed in Fire Facilities

The fire department has begun installing digital dashboards in all of its facilities, a roll out that will be completed this summer. The digital bulletin boards turn raw data into meaningful information, and being installed at all fire department facilities will help to improve situational awareness and operation performance. Done in real-time, the dashboards can monitor dispatch call processing times, improve operations and performance on emergency incidents, show current and forecasted fire weather, show current fire incidents throughout the state, and provide relevant city updates.

North Zone Fire Promotional Testing

Recently the Carlsbad Fire Department participated in the San Diego North Zone Regional promotional process where 10 candidates completed the Engineer’s Exam. Fire departments within the North Zone have adopted the regional testing process and 9 Captain’s are now preparing for the upcoming Zone Battalion Chief Exam taking place in June. The regional testing process has been a goal for Fire Chief’s throughout the San Diego North Zone and is proving to be a valuable opportunity for local agencies to test together in an effort to maintain consistent standard operating procedures on the fire ground.
