Good morning Team Carlsbad!
Well, it’s been six weeks since I officially became your city manager. Seems like a good time for a check in and to let you know where I have been focusing my time and what’s coming up.
Facility Visits
I have made it out to most of your facilities but, depending on schedules, I am still working toward my goal of meeting all of your face to face. I hope to see you at the health fair and fall BBQ, if not before then.
Intranet and Communication
I am loving our new intranet and hope you are too. Many of you have sent me suggestions through our “virtual suggestion box.” Please keep those coming. I’ll send periodic updates to let you know what people are sharing and how we’re using the input.
Upcoming Election
As you can probably imagine, the election is keeping everyone at City Hall busy these days. We held a candidate’s briefing last week and continue to help all our candidates get access to information and understand our protocols. Please be sure to read the guidelines for city employees that was shared recently.
Hiring
We’ve welcomed new staff and celebrated several promotions over the past six weeks. The administrative services director, utilities director and chief innovation officer are three key hires currently in the works. I look forward to making announcements on those recruitments soon.
Training and Development
We’ve launched new training and other resources to help city employees be more actively engaged in creating their career paths here and talk to their supervisors about how to achieve their professional goals. This week we’ve got training on this topic, following training for supervisors held over the past few weeks. Keep an eye out for more resources and training in the works.
Orion Center
If you haven’t had a chance to read up on the Orion Center, please check out this recent article – our new centralized maintenance and operations facility has been approved and is getting underway. Very exciting.
Rules to Live by
You may have heard about some of the discussions I’ve been having with your department directors about how I like to manage and the kind of organization I hope we can create for the future. If not, please check out this summary and talk about your impressions with your supervisor and colleagues. I’d also love to have your feedback on any of the topics mentioned.
It’s an exciting time for Carlsbad, and one full of a lot of change. Let’s keep the lines of communication open as we navigate these changes together.
I’m now off to the League of California Cities conference in Long Beach for a couple of days. No matter how busy we get, I think it’s always worth taking a little time away from the office to expose yourself to new ideas and see how other cities are grappling with issues similar to our own. Can’t wait to share what I learn!
Have a great day.
