Team Carlsbad,
Hope you all had a great weekend! Before I get to this week’s kudos, I wanted to make sure you saw the invitation for our annual Holiday Breakfast and Employee Service Award Recognition ceremony come through your email. Believe it or not, it’s now less than a month away, on Dec. 17!
This is the one time a year that our entire organization gets to gather in one place to celebrate our service to the community, so please RSVP on your Outlook calendar by Dec. 3.
I am looking forward to seeing you there.
Now, onto the kudos!
A milestone for protecting Carlsbad’s environment
Last week, City Council adopted an updated Climate Action Plan that will help Carlsbad meet statewide targets for reducing greenhouse gas emissions through 2045.
This update is the latest chapter in the city’s leadership when it comes to protecting our natural resources and meeting the sustainability goals outlined in City Council’s 5-Year Strategic Plan.
Remember that in 2015, the city became one of the first in the region to adopt a Climate Action Plan. That plan allowed the city to exceed the state target for reducing greenhouse gas emissions to 4 percent below 2012 levels by 2020.
A big thank you goes to Senior Program Manager Katie Hentrich for overseeing the Climate Action Plan Update from start to finish.
Working together to keep Team Carlsbad safe
Recently, our Fire Department teamed up with Public Works for a training exercise that involved rescues from confined spaces.
Using one of the city’s sewer pump stations, our team simulated rescuing workers trapped in small areas.
While we hope these never happen, I’m glad to see our team being proactive to make sure if it does, we will be prepared. Thank you to all who took the time to participate in these important training exercises.
Increasing efficiencies and protecting the city from fraud
Kudos are also in store for Accounting Clerk Rachel Jameson for overseeing the roll out of a new system that helps our staff be more efficient and protects the city against fraud at the same time.
The new system, called Payment Works, serves as a one-stop shop for vendors to provide invoices and key business information. It also validates their information before any work can start, protecting the city from fraudulent payments.
Since the beginning of the year, finance has processed roughly 100 new vendors. Each new vendor in the system frees up staff from having to personally collect data, increasing efficiency. Thank you, Rachel, and all staff involved.
That’s it from me this week. Stay safe, take care and I’ll be back next week with more updates and kudos.
Scott
