Team Carlsbad –
As schools across Carlsbad get ready to open their doors, I wanted to begin this week’s update with a major shout out to the huge interdepartmental effort to serve the community through summer programming. Also this week, Team Carlsbad shines in using technology to once again be brilliant at the basics.
Summer hiring a big undertaking
Each summer, Parks & Rec and Library & Cultural Arts host hundreds of classes, camps and activities for our community.
Pulling this off requires the city to hire more than 100 employees and that’s no small undertaking. So, I want to acknowledge our HR hiring team for all the behind-the-scenes work to recruit, hire and onboard our summer part-time staff.
Through close collaboration with so many people in the Community Services departments, IT and Communication & Engagement, I’m happy to report we offered our full array of activities this summer.
And of course, many thanks to all full and part-time employees who serve the community with these meaningful summertime activities.
Making an impression that lasts beyond summer
While we’re on the subject of summer activities, I did want to share a note from a parent whose child attended numerous camps this summer. She wrote the city to say, “We were on vacation last week and at the end, my little one asked when she could go back to camp because she really missed it. So, THANK YOU so much for making the camps amazing and giving them a great summer.”
The community member gave a special shout out to Recreation Supervisor Eric Sapp, who is in the below picture with the campers. Thank you again to all staff involved. To be on vacation and ask to go back to camp is some very high praise!
Paying it forward with a data driven approach
Last month, five members of our IT team taught industry professionals at an international conference how Carlsbad is taking advantage of technology and data to ensure the city delivers top-notch, timely services.
Our team presented on the city’s digital approach to ensure the community gets everything from clean, reliable drinking water to improved emergency response times.
Presenters at the conference included:
GIS Associate Analyst John Elliott
GIS Associate Administrator Monique Larragoitia
GIS Associate Analyst Aurora Moreno-Resendiz
Business Intel & Analytics Manager David van Gilluwe
Senior Engineer Daniel Zimny
Thank you to all staff who invested your time to grow your skills at the conference.
Have a great week, stay safe, be kind to one another and I’ll be back next week with more kudos and updates.
Scott
