Carlsbad Beach Chair Unveiled At this past Sunday’s 20th Annual Art in the Village, the Carlsbad Cultural Arts Office, in collaboration with the Community & Economic Department, unveiled the design for a new Carlsbad Beach Chair which is part of the city’s Temporary Public Art Initiative. Inspired by a dual interest to develop an iconic work of art that could be replicated through Carlsbad and to bring a facet of the beach city-wide, this new project will bring highly-stylized beach chairs designed by different artists throughout the city. The chair design, which was unveiled at Sunday’s event, was created by local artist Michael Stutz. A temporary public art committee, comprised of Arts Commissioners and local residents, selected Carlsbad artist Ron Juncal to paint this first chair. The committee was impressed with his abstract and colorful design which will certainly draw attention. The immediate goal is to install the first beach chair in the Village before the end of the year. Future beach chairs will be commissioned in 2019 and placed throughout Carlsbad. A call to artists will be released in early 2019 to solicit additional designs. At Art in the Village, community residents were asked to suggest locations for future chairs at the Family Open Studios which were part of Sunday’s event. In addition, the TGIF Concerts in the Park mobile stage made its community debut at Art in the Village.
