Preliminary Budget Heads to City Council, plus some kudos

Good afternoon, Team Carlsbad –

Hope everyone enjoyed the little break from the May gray over the weekend. This week is a big one for our city because the preliminary budget for next fiscal year will be presented to the City Council.

Preliminary budget

At Tuesday’s meeting, the City Council will hear what’s in store for the new fiscal year that begins July 1 and how the city plans to fund operations.

We would not be in the strong position we are without the hard work of each and every department. I also want to give a special shout out to our Finance Department staff for crunching the numbers and preparing our city budget.

On Thursday, we’ll be hosting the community for a workshop where they can give their feedback on the budget. It will head back to the City Council for final approval on June 18 before the new fiscal year begins.

Thank you to our entire staff for your dedication, collaboration and for continuing to provide high quality services to the community as efficiently as possible.

Sharing our expertise

Congratulations to Utilities GIS Associate Analyst John Elliot and GIS Associate Administrator Monique Larragotia for their successful submission of an abstract to the ESRI User Conference.

Their abstract described the city’s GIS-based approach for carrying out new federal rules to better protect communities and children from the impacts of lead in drinking water. In order to make this happen, the team had to review more than 27,000 service line connections from city piping to private property. That sounds daunting, but utilizing the city’s GIS technology, our team accomplished the task in a year!

No surprise, the conference accepted their abstract and John, Monique and Utilities Senior Engineer Daniel Zimny – who is overseeing the compliance effort -- will be presenting at the world’s largest GIS conference in July.

Public Works Week 2024

This week marks the beginning of Public Works Week 2024. This year’s theme is “Advancing Quality of Life for All,” and I think that’s very appropriate for our department.

Here in Carlsbad, our Public Works Department touches everything from water and sewer lines below ground to how we get around at street level to the lights standing tall above us. And this year has been a bit more challenging, with several storms – including a tropical storm – keeping our team on high alert and ready to respond. In all, their work enables our community to lead healthier, happier and more vibrant lives.

Thank you, Public Works team, for what you do out in the field and behind the scenes. You exemplify brilliance at the basics.

And a big shout out to our entire city staff for always serving our community with enthusiasm and zeal.

Have a great week!

Best-

Scott
