Budget update, staff kudos and more 06-13-22

On Tuesday, the City Council will consider adoption of the city budget for the fiscal year that starts July 1. Many people think the budget is just a bunch of numbers, but it’s really so much more. The annual budget is our playbook for the year, listing all the goals, priorities and day to day services that will be provided by the city over the next 12 months. It’s also the best way we can be transparent with our community about how we are working toward their vision for the future and where exactly their taxpayer money is going.

Delivering upon the promises of our budget year after year takes the commitment, excellence and coordination of each and every one of you. I appreciate how all the unique services provided by city divisions and departments come together to make up one seamless experience for our residents. Thank you for your passion to public service and demonstrating the high standard of services that makes Carlsbad the best run city period!

Kudos to Parks & Recreation

A resident who lives near La Costa Canyon Park reached out to staff recently to say, “great job” on maintaining parks. The new playground and shade at Poinsettia Community Park earned top marks too, but he was specifically taken aback by the consistent level of top-notch maintenance at all city parks – unlike anything he had ever seen in another city.

Great job to everyone who works to keep our parks clean and well maintained.

Customer service

Being a responsible and well-run city government doesn’t mean we always get it right the first time, but it does mean we’re responsive and take action when needed.

I want to recognize staff in Utilities and Streets who promptly responded to a resident who had concerns about a water line and asphalt patch on her street. Staff listened to the resident, assessed what needed to be done and completed the appropriate work in a timely manner. As a result, the resident reached back out to thank staff for their response and work, especially on a Friday afternoon. This is a great example of customer service. THANK YOU.

Team Carlsbad’s coupon philanthropist

Wanted to give a shout out to Amanda Schoppmeyer in Library & Cultural Arts who was named a 2022 San Diego County Fair “Community Hero” for her philanthropic efforts donating items and supplies during the pandemic.

Where did she get all her supplies? From couponing! Read more about her efforts in last week’s City Manager’s Update.

Have a safe summer

Summer may not be here officially quite yet, but with school out and beach weather breaking through the June gloom, it might as well be.

With summer comes lots of fun opportunities to gather with friends and have fun with visiting relatives. Thank you for continuing to take precautions to reduce the spread of COVID-19. As a reminder, if you test positive or were exposed to someone who tested positive, please notify HR through the COVID-19 intake form so they can make the appropriate workplace notifications if needed.

While in the workplace, please continue to avoid close contact, meet virtually when possible and follow all other protocols, which could vary depending on your work location.

That wraps up this week’s update. Thank you all for your outstanding work. Have a great week, and I’ll be back next week with the latest news for Team Carlsbad.
